IT ALL STARTED WITH A T-SHIRT. I remember buying a cheap t-shirt off a bargain table one day, it had a Pontiac Firebird on it, and above it read the words: "Burn pavement, not money." implying that the car was fast and cheap. Being a carnut, I was excited to have my first car tee (this was before the days of pasar malam car t-shirts and ZUM tees), so I bought it and it became my favourite cotton top for awhile.
Email was anew thing then (yes, it was that long ago),
my wife (then girlfriend) thought it was a good idea to sign me up for my first Internet account with the then popular Pacific Net. So it was, my email address - burnpavement@pacific.net.sg.
That was 10 years ago.
About 2 years after having my first email, I picked up some web building skills at the turn of the millenium, and burnpavement.com was born (that domain name is sadly gone now, I'm trying to get it back though). Along with a friend, I looked in local carparks, SMSA events, Auto Salons/exhibitions for cars to feature. We reviewed 2 cars per week and gathered automotive news for all our viewers.
The site was very well received. The early forumers during the days of Delphi Forums (Car Torque, Singapore Honda Club, etc) visited the site daily and left their encouraging comments in the guestbook. I had viewership from as far as the US, and Burnpavement.com was featured in Sport Compact Car magazine!
I'm humbly proud (that's an oxymoron I know) to have introduced the influx of low-angled, high contrast photos of cars and their parts, which you now see in many local mags (I'm not saying anyone copied me, definitely not! The fact is, I did it some 8 years ago... before they did! Heh.)
Well all good things come to an end, I got tired and gave it up, only to miss it dearly. So in 2004 I tried to revive it, but again got busy with kids and work so I shelved it and vowed to continue one day.
All this time,
friends and even strangers would bug me to bring it back. "You've got the 'eye'!" they said (whatever that means), "It's new and refreshing!" they claimed (well, not anymore!).
So, 4 years later I'm in front of my Mac again, determined this time to finish what I started. The updates are not likely to be as fast and furious (pun intended) as before, but they will come. Thanks to blogging, that adds a more convenient dimension to the site. So I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy putting it together - like I have always said, this site afterall, is for YOU. |
